Leda Graham (born in Rome, Italy in 1971) is a Canadian artist currently living between Canada and the United States. She is best known for her outstanding career in fashion photography as part of the duo Leda & St.Jacques.
She grew up in Rome, Italy where she studied at the Liceo Artistico via Ripetta. At 19, she moved to Canada where she completed her bachelor’s degree in visual arts and photography from the University of Ottawa. Once finished, she then moved to Montreal where her artistic vision and talent quickly gained her access into the fashion world to become one of the top Canadian fashion photographers in publishing and advertising.
The concept of beauty has always been at the core of Leda’s work. Her knowledge and research of art history, the visual arts and photography intertwine fluidly to create a unique statement.
Unexpectedly, a love match blossomed into a new chapter in Leda’s life as an artist. She has always been a romantic, but Leda, fell so deeply in love with her now husband Richard that she abandoned everything in Montreal to move to the United States and start fresh. Her mantra now became “my passionate love, our new life and the unknown path of constant discovery.”
Leda then started a visual “Personal Journal” in 2020 by creating a photo a day. Leda’s approach is personal and vulnerable; she is intrigued by tangled unions and obsessive connections. Strongly inspired by the Japanese philosophy Wabi-Sabi, she explores the concept of beauty through the intangible feelings of our existence, the omnipresence of the passing of time and simple appreciation of the present moment. She illustrates quiet instances in a world dominated by constant disturbance with cell phone notifications and the pressures of social media. With every landscape, every cloud, and every wave, she invites her viewers to appreciate and feel these moments that only exist for a specific instant in time.
All her works of art are unique editions like the moments of our lives. Through fluid steps and techniques in her process, the artist expects for some loss of control to create unexpected rich effects as the surprises in our lives.
On canvas in large format, the process involves high temperature techniques and the use of unique pigments for a poetic yet sophisticated result.
Leda's idea of beauty is ephemeral as we are; wrinkles and aging are a privilege; cracks and textures are magnificent. Leda’s work captures volatile feelings with a romantic and nostalgic approach.
